For today’s Family Fun Times post, I want to again talk about a movie… Family Fun Times is not meant as a political series, but occasionally a movie comes along that really makes you think about what you believe… and sometimes it’s a good idea to think about just that. This particular movie is also a Christmas movie, so if you’re looking for a family activity with a Christmas theme, I highly recommend the movie, Last Ounce of Courage.
We talk much and hear much about our freedoms that we enjoy as Americans. Our freedom is something we hold extremely dear, and something that has defined our nation for all of our history. Some of the most moving reminders of this to me are the stories of families reunited when Dad or Mom in the military returns from their overseas deployment to a teary reunion with their family. The most moving and heart wrenching stories, however, are the ones where they don’t come home… This movie takes a look at one of those stories where Dad doesn’t come home. But it also goes beyond that. It explores the question of what those freedoms are. We say we’re fighting for freedom and we say our freedom is important. But what is that freedom? Is our freedom increasing or decreasing? We have our young folks giving their lives overseas for our freedom, so I think we owe it to them to figure out answers to these questions.
But the movie goes a step farther than all of that… It asks a troubling question. It asks, “What am I doing to defend our freedom?” It goes on to assert that we should all be doing something. I think these are critically important questions. I think this is a movie all Americans should watch. I think it’s a movie all Americans should watch very soon.
The setting is small town America, and we find ourselves watching the mayor and his family. As the story unfolds, the mayor finds himself facing some of the questions we have mentioned here about freedom. We see the fight develop with how the town will deal with Christmas – whether the town will recognize it as the traditional celebration of the birth of Christ. We see a parallel fight going on in the local school district with the children in the Christmas play. All of it is going on in the context of the fact that our soldiers overseas are giving their lives and the very future of our society which is supposedly being done to protect our freedom. What is our freedom? Is it really being protected for the incredibly high price we are paying for its protection?
I don’t know how to say too much more without spoiling the movie for you… But, check the movie out this Christmas season… And more importantly, think about the big questions it poses. What can I do to defend our freedom? What can you do?
Warning – this movie may make you want to run for Mayor of your hometown. It may also make you want to stand up and cheer… This movie says what has needed to be said for years… Get it and watch it! Oh… one more thing…
Merry Christmas to you and your family as we celebrate the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ, given to the earth to live a sinless life and to go to a cross to take our sins upon Himself and to be punished and to die in our place. You will never get a better Christmas gift!
UPDATE: Yesterday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott “urge the City of Orange to keep their nativity scene & not cave to atheist demands“. This is exactly what the movie Last Ounce of Courage talks about. How interesting that it is being played out right now in Texas!
