If my children could drink kefir smoothies every day, they would! These smoothies are so easy to make and the possibilities are endless. I love the power packed probiotic punch (say that 3 times fast!) that we get when we drink these. My children love the taste. Win-win for all of us! Well… win-win for everyone but my husband. Kefir- A Husband’s Perspective might be worth checking out. 🙂
I am going to give you my basic recipe. Feel free to change it any way you wish.
Basic Kefir Smoothies
Kefir
Frozen fruit
Ripe banana (optional)
Raw honey (or another sweetener of choice- Stevia, sugar, maple syrup, sucanat)
Pure vanilla extract
Put the kefir in a high powered blender. Add the sweetener and vanilla. Blend until combined. Add fruit and blend to desired consistency. It’s that easy!
Right now, I make two blenders full of smoothies at a time. I have a lot of little people to feed! We use 2 quarts of kefir. It’s a very good thing that I make my own kefir!
Hints
-I use frozen fruit to make our smoothies cold. You can use fresh fruit and add ice as well.
-If I have a ripe banana, I will throw it in to most smoothies. Bananas are sweet and when I add them, I can reduce the amount of other sweetener.
-Kefir Smoothies make wonderful green smoothies. I started out with a lot of spinach added to my fruit smoothies. I have added kale as well, but it can be bitter.
-Every once in awhile I will add baking cocoa and extra raw honey to make chocolate kefir smoothies! These are really yummy! Chocolate Strawberry Kefir Smoothie Recipe!
And sometimes, if you have a 13 year old boy, and there happens to be chocolate strawberry kefir smoothie left over in the blender, he might grab the blender and drink the rest of it without getting a cup. That might happen… or it might not. I’m sure that would never happen in your house… or in mine!
