Chocolate Syrup

I really like chocolate syrup!  I put it on top of my ice cream, in my mocha, or in my milk.  One day, I checked out the ingredients on my bottle of Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup.  I was appalled!

Let’s take a look!

Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup Ingredients

Let’s take a look at the ingredients in the chocolate syrup that I make at home!

Chocolate Syrup

That makes me much happier!  Now, this is still a “dessert” so it needs to be consumed in moderation, but I love knowing what I am feeding my family!

Like many of the recipes I incorporate into my home, I originally found this one over at Heavenly Homemakers, but I have modified this recipe to make it a bit thicker and I use sugar in my recipe.

Chocolate Syrup

1 C sugar (I use organic)
3/4 C baking cocoa
dash of sea salt
3/4 C plus 1 TB water
1 tsp vanilla extract (I use homemade)

Mix the sugar, baking cocoa, and sea salt in a sauce pan.  Add the water and stir the ingredients together well.  Cook on medium high heat until the mixture begins to boil, stirring constantly.

Chocolate Syrup

Boil for one minute, continuing to stir. (If you don’t stir it, it will burn and be very, very gross!) Remove from heat.  Allow the mixture to cool slightly.  Add the vanilla extract.

I double this recipe and store it in a quart mason jar in the refrigerator.  I have never had it go bad.  I have used it when it is a month old and it is still just fine!
