5 Ingredients to Amazing Cranberry Sauce

Confession time.  Until last year…

Ummm…

Until last year, I did not know you could make Cranberry Sauce at home.  Long pause… I feel so much better to have gotten that off my chest.

And Cranberry Sauce is so stinkin’ easy to make!  Where has it been all my life?  I thought it came in a can and was impossible to get out.

My friend Kim told me you could make it at home.  She is a keeper.  But not just because of the Cranberry Sauce.

So it only takes 5 Ingredients to Amazing Cranberry Sauce.  How’s that for easy?  It can actually be just 3 ingredients if you want to, but I highly recommend using either orange juice or the orange juice concentrate.  It makes it so incredible.

Cranberry Sauce
You can use frozen or fresh cranberries. These were frozen.

Amazing Cranberry Sauce

1 C sugar
3/4 C or 1 C water (see below for chunky or smooth directions)
12 oz. cranberries
2 TB frozen orange juice concentrate (optional)  If using concentrate, reduce water by 2 TB.
1-2 tsp orange zest (optional, but yummy again)

1.      Rinse the cranberries, set aside.  Boil the sugar and water.  If using the orange juice concentrate, reduce the water by 2 TB.

2.      Add the cranberries, frozen orange juice concentrate (if using), and orange zest.

3.      Gently boil for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.  If you listen carefully you will hear the cranberries sing as they pop open.  That’s my favorite part.

4.      See the directions below to modify to your smoothness preferences.

Smooth Cranberry Sauce

1.      Reduce water to a scant ¾ a cup and follow the same directions.

2.      After cooking for 10 minutes, while it is still hot, strain the sauce through a fine mesh strainer, stirring with a spoon and mashing the sauce through into a bowl.

3.      Make sure to scrape the underside of the strainer to get the thicker yumminess into the bowl.

4.      Cool strained cranberry sauce at room temperature.

5.      Refrigerate until completely set.

Cranberry Sauce Smooth

Half my family likes chunky sauce and half them like smooth so I usually make both. Enjoy!
